The Secrets to Puppy House Training
The most important part of dog training to any first time puppy owners is always the first lesson: Proper puppy house training. This means, teaching your dog to go to the toilet outside instead of inside your home.
This should start when the puppy is around six t eight weeks. Even puppies as young as four weeks can already start potty training as long as they already have enough muscle control.
The Basics of Puppy House Training
Similar to any puppy house training, there are two important factors, your dog’s temperament as well as yours. While the very simple training like “sit” and “stay” can be easily learned in just a few days, puppy house training will require weeks, or even months for the puppy to practice it.
Like any other behaviors, you should look for signals that may come before certain actions, and then give them the voice command. If they do it right, this should be followed with praises. While all dogs will answer to nature’s call, the problem here is getting them to do it where you want them to.
The different signs could be circling of squatting, when you see this, pick the puppy up and lead them outside the door. Commands such as “outside” should come along with the actions.
Once the puppy finishes, always give praises. This is very important especially during the start of the training. On average, your dog will need to go every 2 to three hours.
Taking Dog Training to a Higher Level
If you were not able to catch your pup on time, take him outside anyway. Watch how your dog will react. This way, they will be able to relate the command and his behavior.
When it’s time for his next turn to go, take them outside again and immediately. Not only will they know the command and how they are supposed to act, but they will also learn who is the leader of the pack, their alpha.
This is characterized when they associate verbal command with behavior, and then followed with praise.
Punishment is often discouraged, most especially by toilet training. You should never rub your puppy’s dog in waste. Other methods of training that people use are paper or crate training.
They train the puppy to go on a newspaper. A better alternative to this is to use puppy pads that are more absorbent. These are for the smaller breeds who do not go outside their homes at all. However, this will always have some drawbacks.
Even when dogs go on papers, the unpleasant smell will remain in the house even when the top layer is removed. And while humans will always consider this as unpleasant stench, it is quite the opposite for dogs. Dogs are able to sniff off their own aroma, and because their scent is already indoors, it would be very easy for them to miss the paper, and create a bigger mess.
They will also prefer to go indoors even during times where it’s more ideal for them to do it outdoors. This is why puppy house training is more of an everyday thing, that has to be followed up by consistency, treats, and habit.
