Question by NoDayButToday: Dilemma all because of some dogs and irresponsible ownership, what should I do? Should we continue to meet?
Earlier this morning I met up with a friend of mine and her son. The original plan was for them to come over here. But she didn’t want to bring him over here to play with my daughter because we have an American Pit Bull Terrier mix. Who by the way is CGC certified, graduated top of all levels of her obedience classes and is absolutely the best dog I’ve ever owned. I even offered to crate my dog if it made her more comfortable, but no she didn’t like that either.

I’m fully aware that people don’t like my type of dog but it hurt a bit when a friend wouldn’t give her a chance, she liked her until she had a child.

So she wanted us to meet at her house. Only problem is I’m scared of her dogs and don’t want my child around them. She has a standard poodle with absolutely no training who is 6 years old, still potties in the house. And has a bite history. Here its 3 bites and the dog has to be put down. This dog has two reported bites in her record and one was a child. She has several unreported bites. And she has a Min Pin that is super hyper, under exercised and nips at you when you try to sit down on any peice of furniture and she doesn’t believe in crating. The only exercise these dogs get is a few minutes offleash in the yard a day.

So you can see why I don’t want to take my 6 month old daughter over there.

We agreed to meet at the park as long as we didn’t bring any dogs. My daughter really can’t enjoy the park but she is sitting on her own and did like the sandbox. We only stayed a few minutes because here comes my friend with her son and her Standard Poodle. That dog has no business at a childs playground, and whats worse is there is a sign stating no dogs at the playground. He snapped at 2 different kids while we were there. I ended up leaving early. I told her I thought we agreed to no dogs and she was like “Princess needed the exercise, plus we agreed that you not bring your dog” Needless to say I was embarassed and really ticked off.

I care for my friend dearly, but her irresponsibilty when it comes to dogs drives me bonkers. Not to mention its a safety issue. And she refuses to acknowledge there is a problem. But she is still my friend and I still enjoy seeing her.

My question is What should I do exactly about this?

If we continue to let our kids play, where should we meet up?

Or should I just cut my losses on this one and just be friends from a distance?

Part of this is the safety issue and the other part is she just irritated the heck out of me with her irresponsible behavior and I don’t know if I even want my child around that.
Also: Her son is a year and a half and I will say I worry about him in a house with those dogs.
Not to mention she is pregnant with baby number 2.

Should I say anything regarding that to her?

Talah and Sofie: This has nothing to do with discriminating against pit bulls. Or my dog is better than her dog kind of thing. There is the safety of my daughter, who most likely won’t be playing with her son. And the safety of her son and soon to be daughter. That concerns me at this point.
I’m used to people fearing my dog due to her breed, but usually once they get to know her they love her.

I will say it hurt though.
But I am concerned over the dog with a bite history. I think the Min Pin with training could be okay, he just kind of runs the show. But the dog with a bite history well I believe in if a dog bites unprovoked or out of agression, regardless of breed the responsible thing to do is take the dog and have it put down.
If my dog bit unprovoked or out of aggression, there would not be a next time.

The welfare and safety of your child is definitely more important than remaining friends with this idiot.

If she can’t leave her nasty dog at home, then don’t meet.

Question by shannon: Training a 8 week old puppy?
I just got a puppy last week, and she is 8 weeks old. She is a lab mix with a little collie in her. she is a wonderful puppy just not sure how to train her. I bought Iams puppy treats today but she doesn’t want anything to do with them. how can i “train” her if she doesn’t want treats. Will saying GOOD JOB work??

If she isn’t treat motivated then yes, you can use verbal praise. If that doesn’t work you can try her favorite toy or even use a high reward treat such as cheese, hot dog or something along those lines. I tend to switch up the treats when training my dogs…i use baby carrots, hot dog, string cheese (their fav), pieces of chicken, etc
